Filomena Trindade, MD, MPH, ABOIM, ABFM

Filomena Trindade, MD, MPH, is a teacher, author, and recognized international lecturer in Functional Medicine. She is a graduate of and faculty for the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL, where she is involved in the anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine fellowship. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology, she earned her master’s in public health degree in environmental health and epidemiology prior to medical school. She graduated first in her class in family practice from the UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, CA, and completed her residency at University of California, San Francisco–affiliated Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency. She has been in clinical practice for more than 18 years and is currently active in the development of teaching programs in Functional Medicine in the United States, Latin America, and Europe.

Michelle Carrington, MS, CNS, LDN

Michelle Carrington is owner of Carrington Nutrition, a nutrition practice that specializes in pre-diabetes and diabetes. She helps women lose weight, lower cholesterol and balance blood sugar by teaching them how to eat without giving up the foods they love. Michelle has a master’s degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health from Maryland University of Integrative Health. She is a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) and Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. She has a passion for educating women, particularly women of color, on how to make healthier versions of their favorite foods. She believes healthier food choices and self-care will help women avoid the health disparities prevalent in their communities.

Certification Requirements

To be eligible for the Certified Personalized Nutrition Practitioner (CPNP) credential, candidates must meet each of the following requirements:

1. Education

Degree and Training Requirements

Degree Requirement: The candidate must hold one of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in the field of nutrition, dietetics, or related health science field from a United States regionally accredited college or university, or its foreign equivalent; or
  • Master of Science or doctoral degree in health science or medicine, from a United States regionally accredited college or university, or its foreign equivalent;   

“Regionally accredited” means an institution that was accredited, at the time the degree was awarded, by a regional accreditation body in the United States which is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. Degrees from institutions outside the U.S. must be from that country’s equivalent of a regionally accredited U.S. institution and translated. Licenses from countries outside of the U.S. must be translated and have nutrition in legal scope of practice.


Training Requirement: All candidates must have completed all three modules of the American Nutrition Association (ANA) Personalized Nutrition Practitioner Training program. Please do not apply to sit for the exam until you have completed the training program.

2.  Examination

The candidate must pass the Certification Examination for Personalized Nutrition Practitioners. 

The Certification Examination for Personalized Nutrition Practitioners is designed to test the knowledge and skills acquired by those who have successfully completed the educational requirements outlined above.  

The CPNP Exam is offered year-round and can be taken once the training is complete.

3. Experience

  • State license or certification as a healthcare practitioner in the U.S. with nutrition in legal scope of practice, including MD/DO, DC, ND, NP, PA, APRN, Pharmacists, RDN, or foreign equivalent; and

The American Nutrition Association designates this enduring material for a maximum of 40 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists designates this activity for a maximum of 40 Continuing Education credits for Certified Nutrition Specialists.
