Important Update: New Requirements for CNS Alignment and ACNPE Accreditation

ANA Clarifies the Roles of ACNPE and BCNS

Over the past two decades, the American Nutrition Association (ANA) has advanced personalized nutrition (PN) as a distinct and emerging healthcare discipline. We thank our university and SPE partners for their support in bringing this vision to fruition. As in all recognized healthcare professions, accreditation and certification play essential but separate roles in ensuring educational quality, supporting workforce integration, protecting the public, and strengthening long-term professional credibility.

Accreditation evaluates educational programs and institutions, while certification evaluates the qualifications and competence of individual professionals. In short, accreditation applies to programs; certification applies to people.

The field of personalized nutrition and the Certified Nutrition Specialist® (CNS) credential are supported through the complementary roles of three independent organizations:

1. Professional Association: American Nutrition Association (ANA)

The ANA advances the field of personalized nutrition through professional education, continuing education, public policy advocacy, research advancement, and community leadership.

2. Accrediting Body: Accreditation Council for Nutrition Professional Education (ACNPE)

ACNPE accredits the graduate programs and supervised practice experiences that prepare future practitioners, helping ensure educational quality, institutional integrity, and program effectiveness.

3. Certifying Board: Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS)

BCNS establishes eligibility requirements for the CNS credential and administers the board certification examination for individual practitioners. Certification demonstrates that a practitioner has met defined standards of professional competence.

Maintaining clear separation among the professional association, accrediting body, and certifying board reflects established healthcare credentialing best practices. This structure promotes transparency, minimizes conflicts of interest, and helps ensure that standards remain rigorous, independent, and focused on public protection.

A Strategic Transition to Programmatic Accreditation

Widespread adoption of accreditation represents an important step in positioning personalized nutrition within the broader healthcare landscape. To support the continued development of the field, the ANA, ACNPE, and BCNS are implementing a phased transition from BCNS approval of coursework and Supervised Practice Experience (SPE) supervision to ACNPE accreditation. This is an important step as we work to align with best practices followed in other healthcare professions.

Key Milestones for MS Degree Programs

Phase 1: Transition Timeline to Accreditation

Effective January 1, 2027

  • BCNS will discontinue program-level coursework approval.
  • ACNPE will assume responsibility for review of degree and coursework for alignment with CNS educational eligibility requirements.

Effective June 1, 2027

All MS degree programs that are not yet accredited but seek to publicize alignment with CNS educational eligibility requirements must have initiated the ACNPE Curriculum Review process. (This includes programs that have been previously reviewed by BCNS.) Programs that have not initiated this process may no longer publicize alignment with CNS eligibility requirements.

ACNPE Interim Curriculum Review Process: Submission of the following:

  1. Application documenting how coursework and required prerequisites align with Standard IV Program of Study (including General Requirements).
  1. Syllabi for all required courses. Syllabi must include course descriptions and course learning outcomes.
  1. Application review fee: $2,000 (Applicable toward future ACNPE accreditation fees if Eligibility Application is submitted by December 31, 2027)

As part of the review process, ACNPE will provide guidance on preparation for accreditation as well as appropriate language for communicating alignment with CNS educational eligibility requirements.

Immediate Benefits for Universities

Participation in the interim review process enables programs to:

  • Gain authorization to communicate alignment with CNS educational eligibility requirements using approved, compliant language.
  • Differentiate their program in a growing graduate nutrition education market.
  • Receive access to ACNPE guidance to support accreditation readiness and educational webinars introducing the CNS certification pathway.

Phase 2: Accreditation

Effective January 1, 2030

All MS Degree programs publicizing alignment with CNS educational eligibility requirements must be ACNPE accredited or have an Eligibility Application approved by ACNPE. All other MS degree programs must remove CNS alignment language from their materials.

As future programs become available, they will be encouraged to enter into the accreditation process in order to publicize alignment with the CNS eligibility requirements.

Key Milestones for Supervised Practice Experience (SPE) Programs

Effective January 1, 2032, all candidates must have completed an ACNPE-accredited SPE program, or a program in the accreditation pathway, in order to meet CNS eligibility requirements. BCNS will continue to accept SPE hours from candidates who completed the full 1000 SPE hours with non-accredited SPE programs and/or individual supervisors by December 31, 2031.

To support candidates, supervisors, and SPE programs through this transition, the following timeline has been developed:

Effective January 1, 2027 –

  • BCNS will discontinue SPE supervisor and program approval.
  • Existing BCNS supervisor approvals will remain valid until their expiration date and no later than January 1, 2030.
  • On an interim basis, ACNPE will assume responsibility for reviewing individual SPE supervisors for eligibility based on SPE Accreditation Standard III: Program Personnel, Section B. Eligibility will be granted for a three-year period and expire no later than December 31, 2031. (This review is not required for supervisors within SPE or degree programs seeking accreditation.)
  • BCNS will continue to accept SPE hours from candidates who completed the full 1000 SPE hours with non-accredited SPE programs and/or individual supervisors by December 31, 2031. ACNPE will support individual ACNPE-eligible supervisors in connecting with ACNPE-accredited SPE programs to continue supervising.
  • SPE hours within an ACNPE-accredited degree program will continue to be eligible when transferred to an ACNPE-accredited SPE program according to accreditation policies.

Current SPE Programs

As of January 1, 2027, all current SPE programs publicizing alignment with CNS eligibility requirements must participate in the accreditation process by completing the following:

  • By June 1, 2027: Submit the Intent to Accredit & Commitment Agreement, which includes a $500 deposit to formalize the program’s intent to enter the accreditation process and receive ongoing advisory sessions with ACNPE. Advisory sessions will provide individualized support for programs to become ready to submit an eligibility application. (Applicable toward future ACNPE accreditation fees if Eligibility Application is submitted by December 31, 2027.)
  • By December 31, 2027: Submit an eligibility application to ACNPE to have deposit applied. Eligibility Applications received after this date will follow the 2028 Fee Schedule.
  • During 2028-2029: After approval of the Eligibility Application, programs will complete a Self-Study Report and virtual Site Evaluation.
  • By January 1, 2030: All existing SPE programs must be accredited.

SPE Programs launched after January 1, 2027

  • Step 1: Within 6 months of launch, submit the Intent to Accredit & Commitment Agreement
  • Step 2: Within 6 months of signed agreement, submit an Eligibility Application
  • Step 3: Within 18 months of Eligibility Application approval, complete a Self-Study Report and virtual Site Evaluation

Value & Benefits for Institutional & SPE Partners
